In the 1980s, the Roman pot became very popular. The large clay pot was found in almost every kitchen and all kinds of treats were prepared in it, especially for celebrations of all kinds. Over the course of time, the Roman pot has fallen into oblivion, but you can still cook tasty dishes in it today. The Roman pot is made from fired clay with a porous surface. Before use, the pot is soaked in water so that the clay can soak up the water. This water is evenly distributed to the food inside the pot during cooking, ensuring that the ingredients are cooked gently. Dishes from the casserole are not only delicious, but also healthy! Provided the pot is also clean.

Removing musty smells or burnt-on food from your casserole is very easy. It is best to clean the pot immediately after use:

  • Leave the Römertopf cool down first and then place the pot and lid in warm water for at least 30 minutes to loosen any incrustations.
  • Remove residues with a soft brush by scrubbing gently. If necessary, apply a little mild washing-up liquid to the brush. You should not use aggressive cleaning agents to clean your Dutch oven. They can attack the clay and clog the pores.
  • You can remove stubborn stains and unpleasant odors with a Paste of baking soda and water eliminate.
  • Then rinse the casserole thoroughly with clear water and let it dry completely.

Cleaning the casserole after long storage

If you have found a dusty Roman pot in the cellar, the cleaning method described above will probably not be enough to remove the stink without leaving any residue. In this case, you will have to resort to a somewhat more complex procedure:

  • First, you should place your casserole in water for 15 minutes so that the pores can soak up the stink.
  • Take the pot out of the water and fill it with clear, cold water and a dash of vinegar.
  • Place the pot in the cold oven and heat the casserole slowly until the water starts to boil.
  • Let the vinegar water boil for about 30 minutes.
  • Then take the casserole out of the oven and rinse it thoroughly with water. Be careful: The water should not be too cold, otherwise the clay may crack.
  • The casserole should be left to air dry completely.

Tip: To prevent your casserole from smelling musty, you should store it in an airy place. Place the lid upside down on the pot so that the air can circulate better.
